I became KALW Public Radio's new Digital Media Intern beginning Jan. 2020. My roles included photographer, videographer, and visual media editor I crafted and incorporated visual media for or in promotion of stories online.  I also edited their preexisting and future content into social media friendly packages for audiences on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.  Overall, further engaging their listeners with a more interactive experience while soliciting new audiences through digital media was my role.  It was my job to bring KALW into the 21st Century.

America's COVID-19 Pandemic

When COVID-19 became a national pandemic with city then statewide mandates for shelter-in-place and shutdowns of all non-essential establishments, my internship was forced to halt.  Reluctant to be dormant, I telecommuted.  I offered to interview bar and restaurant owners in Chinatown right before the shutdown.

One interviewee was Certified Public Accountant and devout R&G Lounge Customer Calvin Louie.  His input on the impact of local, ethnic businesses was used in an episode of Crosscurrents

Interviews aside, I chronicled daily life around San Francisco during shelter-in-place through photojournalism in a series titled Coronavirus Shutdown In Pictures.

Super Tuesday was a huge day for San Francisco and beyond!  Everyone at the station was on duty all day throughout the Bay .  I strategized a plan with the news director to cover 4 polling stations and attend watch parties throughout San Francisco.  I interviewed voters enthusiastic of all demographics.  I learned about the legal regulations dictating proximities from poll stations one could record and interview.  I learned to circumvent misleading or guarded poll workers.  Overall, I captured the sights of locals, places and politicians (past, present and prospective) on the day of national democracy.

During S.F.'s annual Lunar New Year parade, I provided photographic coverage of the event deemed the largest outside of mainland China.  Although members from every local news station attended and had their own footage, I wanted to document the impacts of the coronavirus scare if any.  Other than some wearing surgeons masks and empty bleachers along the route, I couldn't definitively conclude any negative impacts of xenophobia at the time.  As the crowds and cheers eventually increased, it seemed the welcoming of the Year of the Rat maintained to be the grand focus.

During the national, annual Women's March in San Francisco, I offered to provide coverage when no one else would.  I provided visuals to accompany content extracted from Associated Press.  Of the 80 photos and videos I captured, 16 were selected for a slideshow.  My editorial focus was guided by 2 themes: Women's March and San Francisco.  Out of all the media I'd captured, I made sure the ones I selected had something indicative of those 2 themes.  I wanted to ensure photos couldn't be misinterpreted as a political or non-political rally at any place in Northern Ca or the U.S.
